Destroying Dora (aka DIY nightlight)

I came across this nightlight on Pinterest a while ago, and have been keeping it in the back of my mind as a possible DIY for the nursery.  After reading the directions on how they made theirs, I got bored at about step 3 and knew there had to be an easier way.  And lucky me, while at Ross yesterday I found this Dora nightlight for $1.99 and snapped it up, as I knew it would be perfect to execute the project.

The first thing I did was take the pink plastic disc off of the night light.  Luckily this snapped off really easily (which was, besides the $1.99 price tag, the main reason I bought it).

Since I would need something to hold the new cover onto the night light, I essentially destroyed all of the pink plastic Dora cover except the part that snapped onto the plug.

Using the same method I used for my Prince Caspian typography artwork, I made a new cover.  I decided to use “gute nacht” on the canvas.  (Side note- the hubs is German and my maiden name is Sheppard, so guess what this baby will be.  Yep, a German Sheppard).

The canvas is 5″x5″ from Joann’s and was $2.14 (50% off).  I spray painted the entire canvas pink, then printed out the letters on regular paper, traced them onto contact paper, cut them out, and stuck them onto the canvas.

Then I coated the entire canvas in gold spray paint and once it dried, peeled off the letters.

Using Liquid Nails, I attached the destroyed Dora disc/snap to the back of the canvas.

After the Liquid Nails dried (it takes about 12 hours to dry completely), I attached the light/plug to the plastic snap, plugged it in, and it worked! (As if I ever have any doubt about any of our projects…).  And because I already owned the spray paint and Liquid Nails, the total cost for this project was only $4.13!!
